A face emerges through layers of colour and atmosphere — present, yet distant. The green tones disrupt natural skin colour, removing the portrait from literal identity and placing it in a space of reflection and emotional distance. The gaze does not meet the viewer directly; instead it turns slightly away, suggesting a moment of withdrawal, thought, or quiet resistance.
The circular format — the tondo — removes the hierarchy of edges and corners, allowing the figure to exist within a contained world of movement and colour. Soft veils of white intersect the surface like fragments of memory, while small red marks punctuate the calm with subtle tension.
Munro’s portraits use colour not to describe race or realism, but to reveal presence and humanity beyond the surface.
